Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great summer and is ready to "get to gettin'" as Ms. White would say. :) VC Theory: We started groups last week and reviewed the numbers of the major, minor & chromatic scales as well as began the notes of the treble clef. Week of April 16

Homework due Monday 4/16:

1) Harmonize a G major scale using only I, IV & V(7). One chord per note. End on I with cadence.

2) Harmonize a G major scale using any chord while following good harmonic practices. Avoid errors on handout.

Spring is here!

Hey gang,

I hope everyone had a restful spring break. I was pleased overall with your transcription projects and will get them back to you soon, probably next week.

Be thinking about when we can establish a time to meet regularly before or after school to practice dictation and any other skills that may need reinforcement. I hope you all are practicing on your own in addition...

We'll have a quiz over chord and cadence identification. After that we'll move on to harmonizing a given melody.

See you soon!

Class Wednesday 3/14

Homework due 3/14:

1. FRQ (e minor)

2. Chunk composition: Compose 2 1-measure chunks & 2 2-measure chunks. Any key, preferably simple time. Use pitch patterns commonly found in dictation examples. (Ex. 1-3-5-3-1, etc.) We will use the chunks you compose as dictation examples in class.

3. Bring in musical examples of 2 different types of texture. (Monophonic, polyphonic, homophonic or heterophonic.) Any format, though emailing me an mp3 is preferred.

Please don't forget that we'll be taking a practice AP exam both Tuesday & Thursday of next week. (Multiple choice Tuesday, FRQ Thursday.) Don't be late to class - you'll need the entire 90 minutes.

Happy Tuesday!

6/4 chords, cadences & a bit of good form

Hi Everyone,

We'll have a quiz this Friday over 6/4 chords as well as cadences. I might also have you do a bit of formal analysis, depending on how class goes today (a, a', etc.)

Types of 6/4 chords:
Passing - bass "passing through" - moving stepwise
Arpeggiated - chord stays same, goes through inversions thus creating the 6/4 2nd inversion
Pedal - bass stays same while upper voices move stepwise & return
Cadential - I64 -> V -> I

Types of Cadences:
Perfect Authentic (PAC): V-I w/ 1 in soprano
Imperfect Authentic (IAC): V-I w/ 3 or 5 in soprano
Inverted IAC: same as above w/ one or both chords inverted
Leading tone IAC: vii0 - I
Half (HC): ?-V
Plagal (PC): IV-I
Phrygian Half (PHC): iv6-V in minor
Deceptive (DC): V-vi

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hi Gang,

Last class we had a quiz over Ch. 7. Your homework assignment is p. 68 #1-2 from the workbook copies.

This week we'll begin covering the illustrious 6/4 chords (see Ch. 9 in your text.) They are:

Passing
Cadential
Pedal (Neighboring)
Arpeggiated

These are the ONLY times you are allowed to use 6/4 chords in your compositions.

Have a great day & I'll see you 4th block!
